How do you tell your kids that you are divorcing?

On Behalf of Carolann M. Aschoff, P.C. | Mar 17, 2022 | Divorce

Divorce is never an easy topic to discuss with anyone, let alone your children. If you are a parent in New Jersey who is considering or going through a divorce, it’s important to handle the situation with care. You can do so by taking these steps:

Find a calm and comfortable environment

A divorce can be a very emotional time for both you and your children. Find a place where you can have an open and honest discussion without being interrupted. Some parents choose to tell their kids in the comfort of their own home while others prefer to do it in a neutral setting, like a park or coffee shop. Choose whatever feels best for you and your family.

Talk to your kids together

If possible, it’s best to have both parents present when telling the children about the divorce. This way, they can see that you’re both on the same page and that there is no one to blame. It’s a good idea to have a plan in place for how you’re going to tell them.

Reassure them that they’re not responsible

Many kids blame themselves when their parents get divorced. It’s important to reassure them that the divorce is not their fault and that they did nothing wrong. Explain to them that sometimes adults want to end their marriages, and there’s nothing the kids can do about it.

Answer their questions honestly

No matter how difficult it may be, it’s important to answer your children’s questions honestly. They deserve to know what’s going on, and they’ll likely have a lot of questions. Be as open and honest with them as you can without giving them too much information about the divorce process.

If you take these steps, telling your children about your divorce can be a little easier. Just remember to be patient, honest and reassuring. They’ll need all of that support during this time.
