Thinking of your kids during your New Jersey divorce

On Behalf of Carolann M. Aschoff, P.C. | Mar 17, 2022 | Divorce

When you are getting a divorce, one of the most important things to think about is how it will affect your kids. You want to make sure they are taken care of and that they don’t feel like they are the reason for the divorce. This can be tough, but with a little planning and communication, you can make sure that your kids have a smooth transition during this difficult time.

Look into out-of-court options

Divorce litigation can be hard on everyone, especially kids. This is because the divorce process can be very public with both sides airing their grievances in court. If you can, try to look into out-of-court options, such as mediation or collaborative divorce. If you and your spouse can agree on the terms of your divorce, you may be able to avoid going to court. This can be a less stressful option for everyone involved, especially your kids.

Communicate with your kids

Another important thing to think about when you are getting a divorce is how you will communicate with your kids. You will need to be honest with them and explain what is happening. Try to answer their questions as best as you can, and let them know that they can come to you if they have any more questions. It is also important to let them know that they are not the reason for the divorce.

Create a parenting plan

If you have kids, one of the best things you can do is create a parenting plan. This plan will outline how you and your spouse will share custody of your children. It should also include a schedule for when the children will spend time with each parent. Having a parenting plan can help to make the transition smoother for everyone involved.

If you are getting a divorce, these are three important things to think about. Divorce is hard on families, but you can make it easier with reasonableness, decisiveness and communication.
