How parents can work together to raise their children

On Behalf of | Dec 26, 2019 | Child Custody

When two adults in New Jersey decide that they no longer want to stay married to each other, they have the option to end their relationship. However, they don’t have the option of ending the relationship that they have with their children. Therefore, they may have to work together to ensure that their kids are cared for and are given whatever they need to grow into healthy adults.

It isn’t uncommon for a noncustodial parent to make child support payments to the custodial parent. It is also possible that an individual will have to make alimony payments to a former spouse. The exact amount of an alimony payment may be decided either through a negotiated divorce settlement or a ruling made by a judge. It is generally in an individual’s interest to create a deal without a judge’s help.

Parents are encouraged to put their differences aside for the sake of their children. This may mean that they have no contact with each other except to discuss subjects related to their sons or daughters. It may be easier for parents to learn how to communicate with other by going to therapy. During therapy sessions, they may be able to create boundaries or other guidelines that can help them maintain a civil relationship.

Typically, parents will be allowed to share custody of their children. In the event of a child custody dispute, it may be worthwhile to seek the guidance of a legal representative. This may help an individual resolve the matter either through mediation, arbitration or by going to court. An attorney may help a parent obtain evidence that a child is in danger while with the other parent. Legal counsel may also help parents show that they are capable of increased rights to their children.
