On Behalf of | Jan 11, 2018 | Divorce

When a marriage has entered troubled waters, there is always that one final straw that breaks the camel’s back. A working theory among lawyers is that a last holiday or vacation together is often this final straw. Interestingly a study taking data from divorce filings during the last 15 years has shown that in the United States, there are drastic increases in the number of people filing for divorce in March and August – after the winter holidays and summer vacation.

New Jersey clients who have just come to the realization that the end of their marriage is inevitable after the recent winter holiday may benefit from a few pointers while preparing for their appointment with a divorce lawyer. While all financial information may only be available later in the month, it is a good idea to start getting everything together, including pay slips, credit card statements and bank statements.  It can also be helpful if a credit report of both spouses can be presented as it makes it easy to see what debts each party has.

While the best advice is to take a break from social media. Some people may find this difficult. It is advisable to take utmost care of what is posted and shared. A second pointer is to become educated on the matter at hand, so before a first consultation with a lawyer, it may be a good idea to become familiar with the New Jersey divorce process. Someone who is prepared can ask the right questions during the consultation.

One thing most people seem to agree on is that divorce is stressful and emotionally draining. That is one reason why it is advised that people contemplating divorce, consider their own emotional well-being. Prepare for what lies ahead by gathering a support group to be there when needed, consulting a therapist or scheduling me-time.

While divorce may not have been how one pictures a marriage to end, it may just be the beginning of a new road to travel on. A consultation with a New Jersey lawyer may be a first step on this new road. It may allow one to consider a life much more pleasurable and peaceful than one’s current life.
