Is it possible to be friends after divorce?

The end of a relationship is never easy and often goes hand in hand with mixed feelings. The same holds true for divorce. A question in the minds of many New Jersey parents who are considering divorce may be: How possible is it for divorced parents to be friends?

Generally, people get divorced because they cannot get along anymore. So, how does one become friends and co-parent under such circumstances? Fortunately, there are ways to do this.

The first thing to remember is that friendship takes time to build, especially after a romantic relationship -- do not try to rush it. Secondly, it may be beneficial to try to forget what happened in the past. Leave those issues behind and focus on the future. It is also helpful to keep conversations superficial and short in order to keep away from sensitive issues.

Divorced parents can also benefit from cooperation even though one may not always agree with what the other is doing. Listening, showing compassion and support for each other can all help in making co-parenting easier and less stressful. Both parties can benefit by focusing on the joint goal of doing what is best for the children.

The advice of a New Jersey family law lawyer during the divorce process may result in a custody agreement which makes becoming friends easier and can result in better co-parenting. The possibility opens doors to reduce the negative impact of divorce on children. At the same time, it provides the possibility that not only the best interest of the children, but also both parents are protected.
